Design Assignment #2: Missing People

I do not remember how long ago this memory dates back to, but I know I was young enough to believe creepypasta stories were real. I was having a sleepover with my childhood friend, and I am not sure how we stumbled across this story, but I for some reason can specifically remember the title.

Originally published as a creepypasta in a chat-log format, “Annie96 is Typing…” follows a casual online conversation between two teens, Annie96 and her friend David, that quickly spirals into something disturbing. What begins as small talk and harmless banter about a storm outside and odd sounds in the yard becomes a scary unraveling of reality.

Here’s why the story scared my so badly as a child:

cue the spooky music…

Annie notices someone who looks exactly like her standing in the garden, staring at her house.

As she becomes more frantic, she insists that this doppelgänger version of herself is getting closer and eventually makes it inside her home. Meanwhile, David tries to calm her and help figure out what’s going on, growing increasingly alarmed by Annie’s descriptions.

David gets a message from “Annie96” that seems off — the tone is cold, and the person on the other end claims she’s fine now and there never was another person. David receives a new message that simply says, “Annie96 is typing…”, suggesting that whatever entity took her place is still pretending to be her.

Who, or should I say what, broke into Annie’s house? And where did she go?

This story left me hiding under the covers wondering why I thought it was a funny idea to read it in the first place. Let’s just say I have not read a creepypasta story since.

The design assignment I did for this post reminded me of this short story. I hadn’t realized how deeply the fictional story had etched itself into my memory. Hopefully, whatever happened to Annie does not happen to me, and I won’t have to use this poster!
